The Women's National Basketball Association agreed to a new collective bargaining agreement that includes a 53% pay raise and maternity benefits for players and overhauls the structure of the season, the league announced Tuesday.Starting with the 2020 season, the new eight-year agreement with the Women's National Basketball Players Association includes a new in-season tournament and changes the compensation structure to include a base salary and performance-based bonuses. The new agreement raises the base salary to $130,000 and creates additional bonuses and prize pools that raise the total compensation by 53%, the WNBA said. It could have been applied up to four times on a single player, making for very little superstar movement, along with boring offseasons and trade deadlines. In the new agreement, players may only be designated three times in 2020 and 2021, and just twice by 2022 and beyond.Teams will also have a larger pot to try and keep players from playing overseas. No one from the league, for instance, has attempted (to my knowledge) to make an argument that the NBA salary cap doesn’t reflect the full value of what NBA players earn, or pushed back on reporting that lists LeBron James’ salary with the Los Angeles Lakers but not, for instance, the extra perks or bonuses he may receive. We also know that teams may dip into a total pool for offseason work that cannot exceed $50,000 under the current CBA.
The maximum salary in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) is $109,500. Last year, players with two years experience (or less) could earn as little as $41,965, and players with three or more years experience, $56,375.This does mean fairer pay for the WNBA’s rookies, though, which again, is especially meaningful for the elites.

But do keep in mind, all numbers reported here are base salary, and do not reflect things like award bonuses or per diem meal allowances or the cost of fuel on flights between games. But here at High Post Hoops, we believe sunshine is the best disinfectant. "There are significant gains all across the board in this new agreement, and everything is in place for our players and the league to thrive," WNBPA Executive Director Terri Jackson said in a statement. The new CBA now awaits ratification by the players and the WNBA Board of Governors.Got a confidential news tip? 2020 Chicago Sky. Players supplement their incomes by playing in leagues in China and Russia, where salaries can be 6 to 12 times the maximum WNBA salary, and with endorsement deals.
